New Line Cinema, Black Entertainment Television and Reebok have announced co-sponsorship of a slam dunk basketball contest for inner city kids, keyed to the release of the hoops pic “Above the Rim.”
The contest prelims will take place in South Central Los Angeles Saturday at noon with a first prize of $ 5,000.
It’s open to the general public, but contestants must be over 18 years old and pro and college ballplayers are not allowed. Twelve finalists will compete March 16 at UCLA’s John Wooden Center.
The dunk competition is tied to the March 23 release of “Above the Rim,” a New Line pic about two inner city high school basketball players.
The contest will take place on a playground at 2705 W. Florence Ave. in South Central.
BET will air the dunk-athon as a half-hour special in late March.
