ColPix drops Sands pact

Columbia Pictures veepee of distribution and Eastern division manager Jay Sands was notified at the close of NATO/ShoWest ’94 that his contract would not be renewed. He will end an 18-year stint at the studio when his contract expires May 7.

Columbia Pictures president of distribution Jeff Blake is expected to tap district manager Jim Amos, who has worked under Sands in New York, to replace the distribution veepee.

The move is the latest in a string of changes in the distribution ranks of Colpix and TriStar over the last two weeks. As previously reported, TriStar president of distribution William Soady is ankling the company to become chief executive of Showscan Corp., while an unconfirmed report has pegged Columbia Pictures senior VP Pat Notaro as Soady’s likely successor.

The 39-year-old Sands worked his entire career at Colpix, including stints in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit and California as salesman, branch manager and branch director. He was moved to New York as VP and Eastern division manager in 1989.
