‘River’ tops in Aspen

Oscar-nominated animated short “The Mighty River” from Canada was named top film at the Aspen Filmfest.

Directed by Oscar winner Frederic Back, “River” will screen during the four-day all-shorts program unspooling at the Colorado event Feb. 24-27.

Another Oscar contender, short “Chicks in White Satin,” was cited as best documentary and student film winner. Other citations have been awarded to “Ice Cream” for event’s grand prize; “Some Folks Call It a Swing Blade” for first prize; and the jury prize to “Karaibe.”

“Down on the Waterfront,” an Oscar short subject hopeful, “Urban Myth” and “The Car Thief” were among films honored with special recognition nods by the 1994 jury.
