Austrian ‘Indien’ best at Santa Barbara fest

The ninth annual Santa Barbara Int’l Film Festival rolled to the end of its 10-day run March 13, and Paul Harather’s Austrian entry “Indien” was named recipient of the Dame Judith Anderson Award for best feature.

Director Xie Fie and actress Sigin Gaowa were singled out for the Bruce C. Corwin Award for artistic excellence for the Chinese “Women From the Lake of the Scented Souls,” while the Santa Barbara Independent Best of the Fest audience nod went to”… and the earth did not swallow him.”

Sascha Schneider and Laurie Zimmelman Schneider’s “Chuppa: The Wedding Canopy” copped the best feature documentary prize from the jury, and Guillermo del Toro won the best director award for the Mexican pic “Cronos.”

Best documentary short prize went to Ellen Bruno’s “Satya,” K.C. Amos’ “Syphon-Gun” was deemed best live action short, and Derek Dale took the best local filmmaker citation for “The Jester.”
