‘Jurassic’ rumbles to vid in October

MCA/Universal Home Video is expected to announce today that it will release triple Oscar winner “Jurassic Park” to homevideo on Oct. 4, delivering one of the most eagerly awaited titles since Disney released “Aladdin.”

While the Steven Spielberg hit has grossed a staggering $ 880 million worldwide, eclipsing all records, the homevideo title is not expected to break any records.

“‘Aladdin’ will still remain at the top, while ‘Jurassic’ will probably do between 15 million and 18 million copies,” said a homevideo industry source. “The animated films are keepers for families with children, but ‘Jurassic’ appeals to a different age group.” The Disney title has logged 24 million copies to date.

Since last July’s Video Software Dealers Assn. conference, there have been inquiries about the street date for the vid from retailers, many of whom were hoping for a Christmas ’93 release to boost sagging business at the nation’s homevideo stores.

Sales through mass merchandisers, such as K mart and Wal-Mart, is expected to lower the suggested list price of $ 24.98 to around $ 15. The laserdisc version, which should sell for $ 39.95, is expected to offer a director’s cut, or provide some B-roll information on the film’s special effects.

“This film will be of particular interest to film buffs,” said Dave Lukas, owner of Dave’s Video in Studio City, the nation’s largest laserdisc dealer. “It will probably be one of the biggest, if not the biggest (seller) in laserdisc.”

The studio remains mum, but sources said execs at the studio will tease the release Wednesday, providing additional details at an April 18 press conference designed to herald the homevideo arrival of “Beethoven’s 2nd.” Further details involving the “Jurassic Park” vid — such as pay-per-view hold backs, the marketing strategy and promotional partners — are expected to be revealed in a press conference set for the beginning of May.
