AstralTech unveils new video plant

Spurred by the booming sell-through market in Canada, Astral Communications has moved its video duplication operations into a new, $ C8 million ($ 5.8 million) plant in the Montreal suburb of Town of Mount Royal, which will allow the Montreal-based multimedia company to increase its annual production to 12 million videocassettes.

AstralTech, the technical services division of Astral, unveiled the 200,000 -square-foot facility Monday at a press conference attended by provincial and federal cabinet ministers.

The new video duplication center will be the seventh-largest in North America, according to Astral.

Astral CEO Harold Greenberg also announced that his company has extended its contract to manufacture all Buena Vista Home Video product for Canada. The extended pact runs until the end of 1996.

AstralTech currently has exclusive agreements with Buena Vista and Columbia TriStar in the Canadian market, and Greenberg says the company will be aggressively going after the other studios now that the plant has greater capacity.

The plant also manufactures videos for many Canadian distribs, including Max Films, C/FP, Allegro Films and Les Prods. La Fete. The expansion will allow Astral to produce 45,000 cassettes daily.
