Silver ponders second ‘Man,’ ‘Rich’ kid

GOOD MORNING: “I love sequels,” sez Joel Silver, who is watching the box office of “Demolition Man” from his home in South Carolina. Should the “Man” continue to demolish the box office, don’t be surprised if Silver sets a follow-up. He’s not skedded to go back into production until March with “Richie Rich,” Don Petrie directing. A youngster’s not yet set. Any chance of Macaulay Culkin coming back? “It’s over so far as I’m concerned,” sez Silver. He’s also readying three bigscreen “Tales From the Crypt,” budgeted at $ 10 million, and it looks like Walter Hill and Dick Donner will take a turn at directing ’em …”Congo” will get the same approach as “Jurassic Park,” assures Frank Marshall , who’ll direct, with wife Kathleen Kennedy producing the Par pic, which he says will be made for $ 30 million, filming to start next fall. “We’re not looking for star names — like ‘Jurassic Park,’ the movie will be the star.” Mike Backes is working on the script and some of the movie will be made in Africa. “We’re looking for a safe place,” notes Marshall. They hope to use a real gorilla “as much as possible,” but the same “Jurassic” creature creators will be involved in this movie version of Michael Crichton’s 1980 novel. The script is updated considerably because of the advance in sophisticated satellite connections — to seek the lost city of diamonds, etc. The Marshalls also launch their animated feature program with Toronto’s Nelvana banner with “The Thief of Always” and a musicalized “Sign of the Sea Horse.” Director Richard Benjamin is winding the Marshalls’ “Milk Money” with Melanie Griffith and Ed Harris in Cincy, “on schedule.”
