Ah, Young love: octogenarians wed

GOOD MORNING: Loretta Young (80) and Oscar-winning designer Jean Louis (85) were married at the Church of Good Shepherd Aug. 10. “We both think it’s a good idea,” said Loretta. “And both our families are delighted, too. We’ve known each other for so long. And when something is right, it just slips into place.” Loretta reminds that she “loved Maggie (Jean’s late wife) almost as much as he did. This is a happy ending.” “A happy beginning,” I corrected her. Her son Peter Lewis and sister Georgiana Montalban stood up for her. Ricardo M. was unable to attend — he’s got a long recuperation from his lengthy back surgery … Steve Martin and Victoria Tenant have separated — amicably. They’ve been married seven years, together 10 and worked together in “All of Me” and “L.A. Par/CBS’ “The Odd Couple — Together Again,” which airs on the 24th, and continues on to Salt Lake City to play a senator in Linda Yellen’s Showtime “Parallel Lives.” He, like the rest of the 18-member cast, is working for scale. “We’re so hungry to do something good,” he notes. Klugman sounds OK but he reminds, “It’s a miracle I’m able to talk.” After the TV’er he’s touring “The Odd Couple” with Tony Randall to raise $ for Randall’s National Actors Theater in N.Y.

BURT REYNOLDS WAS MORE like his old self and Jay Leno did an excellent job bringing Burt around — both humorously and factually Monday p.m. — it also won Leno the latenight numbers. I asked Jay if he’d now bring on Loni Anderson. “We’re not that kind of show,” he said. What did Leno think of Conan O’Brien’s debut? “I thought he was terrific, had good focus, a good sense of humor and looked like he was doing show number 60 or 70 instead of No. 1.” Agreed … SAG president Barry Gordon will chant throughout the high holiday services with Cantor Perryne Anker of Rabbi David Baron’s Temple Shalom at the Wilshire Theatre. … Arriving on the eve of the Jewish holidays is Neiman Marcus’ annual (since 1915) Christmas holiday gift book, which this year appropriately includes a pair of automated lifelike dinosaurs.
