Peter Gallagher may look too callow to be a grifter, but under Tom Cruise’s direction he turns in a solid perf in an astute adaptation of Jim Thompson’s tale.

Cruise draws striking cameos from the two-bit losers Gallagher encounters: poker-playing Bill Erwin and his wife, Jean Speegle Howard; come-on artist Isabella Rossellini; Nancy Travis as Gallagher’s betrayed wife; Bible printer John Reilly; and, frighteningly, Vegas enforcer Joe Viterelli.

Story’s far-fetched but engrossing.
