Vid newswire service launched

In what may be the first of its kind in the country, City News Service and former CBS-TV news director John Lippman are creating a video newswire service for local television stations.

Slated to begin in early 1994, the service will offer subscribing stations about a dozen general stories daily and deliver its coverage by fiber optics.

CNS will mainly cover press conferences and meetings in the Los Angeles area that most news directors send crews to as a matter of course; the theory is that the service will free station reporters to pursue exclusive stories that can generate larger audiences.

Lippman approached CNS president Douglas Faigin with the concept in June and the pair spent the last six weeks pitching their idea to local stations, said a spokesperson for Lippman. When the service moves into the marketplace, Lippman will continue to serve in a consulting capacity.
