Spelling unveils cable venture

Spelling Entertainment Group Inc. announced the formation of a new worldwide cable venture, Spelling Satellite Networks Inc., and the March 1 launch of its first cable channel in Latin America.

Ronald Lightstone, CEO for Spelling Entertainment, said, “The purpose of Satellite Networks is to form partnerships … throughout the world for advertising-supported cable networks.”

The first of those ventures is Tele-UNO, an ad-supported general entertainment cable channel being launched in association with Mexico’s Multivision; it’s eventually planned to cover all of Latin America, Brazil and the Caribbean.

Tele-UNO will go up on Mexican satellites Morelos I and II, and by early 1994 it hopes to go on new Solidaridad satellite and expand to reach all of Latin America.

Spelling, through its subsid Worldvision Enterprises, is the sole equity partner in the cable channel, although Multivision will share in ad profits. Lightstone refused to comment on projected ad revenue, and said no advertisers had signed on.
