New Menendez film gets nod

Add Four Point Entertainment’s “Nightmare on Elm Drive: The Menendez Murders, ” at NBC, to the list of TV projects being developed related to the high-profile murder trial.

The movie joins at least two other previously reported longform entries, including a CBS miniseries from producer Zev Braun — reportedly to star Edward James Olmos — and Saban Entertainment’s “Honor Thy Father and Mother — The True Story of the Menendez Family,” based on an upcoming book by Los Angeles Times reporters Ron Soble and John Johnson (Daily Variety, Oct. 29).

NBC stressed that its “Menendez Murders” project was in the earliest stages of development. ABC is also said to be mulling its own version — that three-network hat trick having been turned last season with the Amy Fisher movies. In addition, if neither ABC nor NBC bites, Saban has said it will make its movie for first-run syndication.

Two juries are still deliberating the fates of Lyle and Erik Menendez. ABC and Fox Broadcasting Co. each devoted an hour of primetime to the story through their news divisions.
