Candy, Second City bid for Canuck comedy channel

Toronto’s Second City Theatre, Vancouver-based broadcaster Western Intl. Communications and actor/comedian John Candy have joined forces toward a Canadian comedy channel.

The Second City Comedy Channel is the second proposed comedy service to emerge after the federal broadcast watchdog, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, called for applications last June. The CRTC is expected to award only one license for a comedy service.

City-TV announced last month that it was linking with Comedy Central in the U.S. to file a proposal for a service tagged Comedy Central Canada.

That bid is spearheaded by Marcia Martin, who has enlisted the support of a Second City alum — her sister, comedian/actress Andrea Martin.
