‘Saved by the Bell’ actor hit with date rape charge

Police said Monday they are investigating a teenager’s claim she was raped by Mario Lopez, though the actor has not been arrested and has denied the allegations.

The 19-year-old actor, who appears on the NBC-TV high school sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” is cooperating with detectives.

“What we have here, basically, is an allegation of date rape,” said police Detective John McAvenia.

Police will present their findings to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office later this week. Prosecutors then will review the case and decide whether to file charges, McAvenia said.

Lopez’s attorney, Wayne Keeney, said his client “vehemently denies this. Anybody who’s met this kid or his family knows he’s just a really gentle soul and a good person.”

The 18-year-old girl, who was not injured except for the alleged sexual assault, told police that Lopez raped her the night of April 28 after she had gone to his house voluntarily, McAvenia said.

Lopez, who grew up in this San Diego suburb, lives in a guesthouse next to his family’s home.

Keeney said he believed the woman might be making the allegations to gain exposure or money. The woman denied that.
