Natalie Merchant, 10,000 Maniacs vocalist and main songwriter, has announced that she is leaving the folk/rock group in favor of a solo career, despite the increasing popularity of the band she co-founded 12 years ago.
The band’s current Elektra release, “Our Time in Eden,” has sold more than 1. 2 million copies in the U.S. since its fall ’92 issue and is No. 89 on Billboard magazine’s album chart.
Elektra plans to release a Maniacs “Unplugged” disc in the fall.
