First to be shot, but second to be released, this entry in the Sjowall-Wahloo series is an efficient police-procedural story, although more suited for TV than for cinema screens.

Filmed in Sweden, “Roseanna” was the first of the 10 Sjowall-Wahloo novels about Martin Beck and his colleagues at the Stockholm police. It establishes the characters, and since pic does the same, it’s rather odd to see it released after “The Fire Engine that Disappeared,” whose action takes place after the events in “Roseanna.”

Yarn deals with the murder of a young American tourist who has been killed aboard a tourist boat and dumped in the water. It seems impossible for the police to find any clues at all. When they finally do, they stake a trap for the killer in which a young policewoman is almost killed. This final sequence is the best in the film, working up nail-biting suspense. “Roseanna” is competently made, its acting tops, especially the perf by Gosta Ekman, whose Martin Beck is as non-glamorous and hard-working as he should be.
