Flush with the success of Warner Bros.’ “The Fugitive,” Tommy Lee Jones has been offered the title role in the Ty Cobb biopic, which Ron Shelton has scripted and hopes to direct, sources say.WB recently picked up the Cobb project after Fox put it in turnaround, and is negotiating to get the “White Men Can’t Jump” director to jump from Fox to an overall deal at WB. Jones would play the legendaryDetroit Tiger, a 12-time batting champion whose prowess at the plate was matched by his nasty disposition. Fox was reluctant to bankroll a pic on such an unsympathetic character. But Jones, whose career was revived by “Lonesome Dove” and has soared since, has a gift for giving loathsome characters depth. Neither WB nor Jones’s reps would comment.
