“Praying With Anger,” directed by M. Night Shyamalan, has been chosen as the winner of the American Film Institute Festival’s First Film Competition for American independent filmmakers. The film was selected from 10 U.S. debut feature films presented in the AFI Fest.

The film will be given a special winner’s screening on the final day of the festival, Thursday, at 1:40 p.m. and 6:50 p.m. at the Laemmle’s Sunset 5 theaters.

The Los Angeles Community Festival, a benefit for the Los Angeles Mission sponsored by Mission Possible and the Global Corps, will take place Aug. 22 at the Shark Club in downtown L.A. Buena Vista TV has cleared the weekly syndicated series “Disney Presents Bill Nye the Science Guy” in 140 markets covering 88% of the U.S., and the off-Disney Channel half-hour “Disney’s Adventures in Wonderland” in 115 markets reaching 75 % of the country. Disney is offering stations the option of combining the two as one program, and feels both shows fulfill requirements of the Children’s Television Act. Twenty-six weekly episodes of each premiere next fall.

Tribune Entertainment Co. will begin offering a Spanish-language feed of “Geraldo” beginning July 12, available in Spanish on sets with SAP (second audio program) capabilities. Tribune says the show will be the first nationally syndicated talkshow telecast regularly in Spanish.
