Media org’s nod: An eco runs through it

“A River Runs Through It,””Once Upon a Forest” and “The Distinguished Gentleman” would seem to have little in common, but each is nominated for an Environmental Media Assn. award.

The third annual awards, to be presented Sept. 28 at 20th Century Fox, honor movies and TV shows based on their “entertainment value and environmental content.”

ABC’s “Dinosaurs” walked away with two of three nominations in the episodic comedy category (the other going to the network’s “Coach”).

CBS swept the drama area with “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and two installments of “Northern Exposure.”

Telefilms and miniseries recognized are “Dead Ahead: The Exxon Valdez Disaster” (HBO), “For Their Own Good” (ABC) and the CBS global-warming miniseries “The Fire Next Time.”

Pieces on “60 Minutes,””Day One,””Home” and TBS’ “Network Earth” are nominated for news, while “Earth and the American Dream” (HBO), “Nickelodeon Special Edition: Plan It for the Planet” and the Disney Channel’s “This Island Earth” are up for top special.

In children’s programming, the syndicated series “Captain Planet & the Planeteers,””Widget” and “Camp Candy” received nods for animated program, while “Harry and the Hendersons,””Beakman’s World,””Adventures in Wonderland” and PBS’ “Futures 2” fill out the live-action kids area.

The non-profit Environmental Media Assn. says the purpose of the awards is to inspire the creative community to “focus their talents on the protection of our environment.”
