Fox homevid release of Henie pix a figure 7

Hoping to tap into the awareness created by the opening of the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, in February, Fox Video has created “Hollywood’s Golden Age,” a homevideo series that will feature popular films of the ’30s, ’40 s and ’50s. The initial release slate will be the films of ice skating queen Sonja Henie.

Seven films of the industry-dubbed Norwegian Snow Queen will be released for the first time as sell-through titles.

An era showcase

The new line from Fox Video will showcase releases from the era’s most interesting films and personalities from 1927 through the mid-’50s.

Henie, who has a secure spot in sports and motion picture history for her prowess as both a competitive skater and as Hollywood’s highest-paid movie star at the time, made nine films for the studio which grossed $ 25 million — a staggering figure for the era.

A golden age

A world champion skater at age 14, Henie was one of the greatest athletes Norway ever produced. She won her first of three gold medals in the 1928 Olympics when she was 16.

In 1938 she earned $ 300,000, becoming the highest-paid entertainer in the United States. She died in 1969 and left an estate worth $ 47.5 million.

Fox Video will release Henie films “One in a Million,””Thin Ice,””Happy Landing,””My Lucky Star,””Everything Happens at Night,””Iceland” and “Wintertime ,” her final film, on Feb. 16.
