The Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has challenged Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs on his vote against the Fox expansion plan, saying that Wachs is trying to be a “roadblock” to the creation of thousands of new industry jobs.
Wachs was the only council member to vote against the Fox plan; the issue will again go before the council in the next several days.
In a letter IA topper Harry Floyd sent to Wachs, the union leader told Wachs that the union will hold a rally at 2 p.m. Tuesday outside City Hall to protest his vote (Daily Variety, June 24).
“At a time when a new mayor has been elected on a slate of bringing business back to Los Angeles, when labor and management have been cooperating to do so, it is inconceivable that one Councilman could be a roadblock to an enterprise that promises to bring thousands of new jobs into our city,” Floyd wrote. “Without creating an atmosphere beneficial to entrepreneurs, studios and production companies, Los Angeles will continue to slide down the economic scale. Other cities are only too happy to have their business.”
