Fox backs off on protective bill

In the face of sharp criticism, 20th Century Fox Studios has dropped its backing of state legislation that would protect its planned $ 200 million Century City expansion from lawsuits.

The bill would have prevented lawsuits challenging the 771,000-square-foot expansion by declaring that it meets all city zoning and planning requirements.

The bill also would have exempted the project from further review under the California Environmental Quality Act.

The L.A. City Council last month approved the expansion, which Fox says will create as many as 1,600 jobs.
