HBO Tropix targets Latino market

Home Box Office is going after the Latino market in the U.S. and Latin America with a new multimedia development firm, Tropix.

The new company’s activities will range from developing English-language programming for broadcast and cable TV to starting new media ventures.

Nely Galan, a onetime head of a New York Spanish-language TV station and host and producer of talkshow “Nely,” is heading the venture along with Augusto Failde. He is a former director of new business ventures and initiator of the international marketing group of the Telemundo network.

In programming, the group will develop original TV programming aimed at Hispanics, reporting to HBO Independent Prods.

HBO Independent Prods. president Chris Albrecht said the group is currently developing a half-hour comedy series for ABC starring Galan, plus it is trying to put together a late night series in the variety format for HBO.
