Mammoth, Atlantic forge bond

Atlantic Records and NorthCarolina-based Mammoth Records recently confirmed a worldwide joint venture that will see Mammoth continue to tap the independent distribution market while funneling developing bands through Atlantic (Daily Variety, June 30).

Mammoth and its staff will remain intact under terms of the agreement, which did not reveal whether the label surrendered equity.

Mammoth will still independently sign, promote and develop artists, but will move those with sufficient sales over to Atlantic and the WEA distribution system.

“This new association offers an artist the best of both worlds,” said Doug Morris, Atlantic co-chairman, “the benefit of Mammoth’s proven ability to work artists at the ground level combined with the long-term potential offered by a major.”

Mammoth was founded less than four years ago in Carrboro, N.C., by Jay Faires.

The label has produced such acts as the Chainsaw Kittens, Blake Babies (which also spawned the solo career of Juliana Hatfield), Dash Rip Rock, Machines of Loving Grace, Dillon Fence and Joe Henry.

First artists to be issued under a Mammoth/Atlantic logo will be Hatfield and Machines of Loving Grace.
