EMI sues Turner over MGM vids

EMI Music Publishing has filed suit against Turner Entertainment, asking $ 15 million in payments it asserts are due on homevid sales of the MGM library of motion pictures.

The complaint, made in the Southern District of New York, cites 476 Turner-owned films that contain more than 29 hours of EMI music.

EMI contends that Turner’s purchase of the MGM library in 1986 obliges the company to pay for licensed music on homevid sales. A spokesman for Turner Entertainment said the company would have no comment.

‘Jungle,’ ‘Opera’ included

Among the films named in the suit are “The Asphalt Jungle,””Ben-Hur” and “A Night at the Opera.”

EMI is represented by James E. Daniels of the Hall, Dickler, Lawler, Kent & Friedman firm.
