Biz Up; ‘Miss Saigon’ 706g, ‘Garden’ 328g, ‘Hamlet’ 123g

Broadway receipts were up 14.1% during Week 46 (April 15 to 21), with 15 of the 21 shows reporting noticeable b.o. boosts.

Receipts tallied up to $5,856,074, with paid attendance taking a commensurate leap of 9.8% to 165,432.

Among the trend-buckers, “The Phantom Of The Opera” remained a sellout, slipping just a tad. “Buddy” fell even less but is hovering dangerously below the 50% capacity level. “Jackie Mason: Brand New” seems to have lost some steam in recent weeks, and Week 46 was no different. Scariest of all was “Lucifer’s Child,” the Julie Harris-starrer, dipping to a hellish 22.3% of capacity.

On the upside – and most of the shows were – “Miss Saigon” was back to a full performance week, with paid attendance at 99.9% of capacity (a mere 12 seats were papered). Mixed reviews won’t prevent boffo biz, as the production netted $706,793.

“Cats” took a big leap, while “Les Miserables” and “Six Degrees Of Separation” were virtual sellouts. “Lost In Yonkers” had another good week at $348,965. “Penn & Teller,” which has been extended indefinitely, was at $182,808. Meanwhile, “Prelude To A Kiss” was up.

Two new productions – the returning, limited-run “Gypsy” and the Broadway Alliance’s second show, “Our Country’s Good” – had healthy first weeks. Also in previews, “The Secret Garden” and “The Will Rogers Follies” showed some momentum.

Receipts for musicals totaled $4,570,916, for a strong 78% of the Broadway total. Tuner attendance was 116,086, for a very good 83.7% of musical capacity. Plays took $1,285,158 for the remaining 22% of the total. Attendance was 49,346 at the plays, making 73.9% of capacity. The average price per ticket was $35.40 for all shows, $39.38 for musicals and $26.04 for plays.
