“The Godfather Part III,” widely anticipated to be the film to beat at the Christmas boxoffice, is in jeopardy of not making it to screens by then.
Daily Variety Columnist Army Archerd reported that a screening scheduled last week for Paramount execs was canceled, as was a sneak preview in San Diego. Archerd, after speaking to Francis Coppola, wrote that the director apparently feels the film will not be up to his standards or the public’s expectations if it is rushed to readiness.
Coppola said his staff was working double shifts in San Francisco to put finishing touches on the film, but Archerd noted that for it to make it to screens by its planned Christmas day opening, it would have had to be done by this past weekend. Paramount brass were to view the latest cut Sunday, then decide on sticking to or delaying its release date.
