Gremlins 2 – The New Batch

Joe Dante & Co. have concocted an hilarious sequel featuring equal parts creature slapstick for the small fry and satirical barbs for adults. Addition of Christopher Lee to the cast as a mad genetics engineering scientist is a perfect touch.

Film opens with a wrecking ball demolishing Keye Luke’s old curiosity shop in downtown Manhattan to make way for another development project by megalomaniac Daniel Clamp, played with relish by John Glover.

The cuddly Mogwai creature Gizmo (wonderfully voiced by Howie Mandel) escapes but is immediately captured by twins Don & Dan Stanton as a research subject for Lee’s science lab Splice of Life Inc. The lab is located in the new Clamp Center office building and, when Gizmo gets loose and exposed to water, the first of hundreds of horrific gremlins are unleashed to wreak mayhem.

Gremlins 2 is sans starpower, but its creatures more than make up for the lack of marquee lure. As realized by Rick Baker, the innumerable creations are quite an eyeful.
