This handsome historical pageant attempts to tell the ‘true story’ behind one of history’s most famous romances, that of 12th-century French philosopher Pierre Abelard and his beloved Heloise which has survived through the ages in the exchange of letters between them, each of them shut off from the world in another convent.

Chris Bryant’s script, based on Marion Meade’s novel, pushes toward a sharp and witty, anticlerical, feminist tract. Abelard shuns emotional commitments as dangerous to his intellectual capacities. Fulbert, Heloise’s uncle, is a mercenary bigot who looks for the best deal on his niece; and Heloise is the smart, intelligent and unconventional girl with the courage to assume responsibility for her feelings.
