Burt Reynolds plays Ernie Mullins, a 61-year-old, graying, professional burglar with a gammy leg and the beginning of a pot belly, in this charming buddy-caper movie.
He teams up with young Mike Lefebb (Casey Siemaszko), a garage hand who likes to break into houses to raid the fridge and read the mail, when they both hit the same place one night. They become partners, with the oldtimer teaching the youngster the tricks of the trade.
What follows is a gentle comedy, filled with incisive observation, which builds to a wry conclusion which won’t set well with action fans.
Reynolds plays the old-timer with a relaxed charm that’s wholly delightful. Siemaszko is fine, too, as the initially nervous and ultimately relaxed and confident young criminal. Sheila Kelley is fun as a prostie who favors colored condoms and likes to be known as an actress.
