The linchpin of the affecting story is provided by Leonard’s dramaturgic sleight of hand in presenting Charlie’s (Sheen) dead father, Da (Hughes), and mother (Doreen Hepburn) as living, breathing temporal characters animated by the successful playwright’s grief-catalyzed imagination.

Sheen’s performance is distinguished by its subtlety, as he’s swept up in the conflicting emotions that attend his wry encounters with his stubborn adolescent self (very capably rendered by Karl Hayden), his domineering mother and, most indelibly, the hard-headed, lyrically aphoristic gardener whose failings as an adoptive father the mature playwright must reconcile with his own hard-earned knowledge of human fallibility.
