Film [from a screen story by David Loughery] centers on ‘dreamlinking’, the psychic projection of one person’s consciousness into a sleeping person’s subconscious, or his dreams. If that sounds far-fetched, it is.
Central character is played with gusto by Dennis Quaid as Alex Garland, a reluctant ex-psychic who hooks up with Dr Paul Novotny (Max von Sydow), who runs a dream research project at the local college that has an elaborate laboratory setup to study the phenomena.
There he meets Dr Jane de Vriees (Kate Capshaw), Von Sydow’s chief assistant who secretly lusts after Quaid, but only until he ‘eavesdrops’ on her erotic dream that involves Quaid. Enter Christopher Plummer as Bob Blair, a secretive and despicable government type who finances and oversees Von Sydow’s research, but covertly plans to use its results for sinister ends.
