The Changeling

The Changeling is a superior haunted house thriller. The story [by Russell Hunter] centers on George C. Scott, a recently widowed music professor, who has moved to Seattle to forget his personal tragedy. His new residence is an old home owned by the local historic society. After moving in, the house begins to do strange things.

It turns out that the noisy spirit is a young sickly boy who was murdered at the turn of the century. The child’s father could not collect an inheritance unless the boy reached the age of 21. After the murder a changeling was put in the boy’s place. The changeling is still alive and the dead child wants to wreak his vengeance on him.

Scott and Melvyn Douglas (as a powerful industrialist) register the strongest performances with Trish Van Devere as coming off rather wooden.
