Sweeney 2

Sweeney 2 is excellent British cops and robbers stuff in which a special squad of Scotland Yard detectives ultimately crack and demolish a gang of bank robbers whose hallmarks include goldplated shotguns. Good action well-spaced and paced; good characterization played with finesse; a witty script and stylish direction all lend the production a degree of distinction.

Thesping is good to excellent. John Thaw is credible and appealing as the hardbitten cop who leads the police team on the case. Also notably fine are Denholm Elliott as a corrupt police officer who lands in the jug, Dennis Waterman as Thaw’s number two, and Georgina Hale as a pickup promoted by the unattached Thaw.
