Four years of work were invested on this $7.5 million production and the expense, care, and expertise shows.
An admirably simple story [suggested by The Rescuers and Miss Bianca by Margery Sharp] about two mice (voiced by Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor) who embark on a quest to rescue a kidnapped orphan girl (Michelle Stacy) from the clutches of an evil witch (Geraldine Page).
There’s real terror in the story, and the Gothic setting of the swamp where the girl is held captive; the maudlin pitfalls of the plot are avoided through deft use of humor, and the plucky character of the young captive.
Among the most memorable sequences are two hilarious ascents by a goofy bird named Orville, who takes the mice on their rescue mission.
