A Little Night Music is based on an earlier film by Ingmar Bergman [Smiles of a Summer Night, 1955] that was turned into a hit Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. In this refilming Hal Prince repeats as director.
All this fuses into an elegant looking, period romantic charade.
There is one sprightly number as the assorted characters set out for a country dinner that will resolve their complicated love problems. There is a noted promiscuous actress ready to settle down with a steady man and her teenage daughter, a staid lawyer with a young wife of 18 whose marriage has yet to be consummated, plus his son and a fiery army lieutenant, lover of the actress, and his jealous but submissive wife.
Uneven and sometimes slow, pic has good looks.
1977: Best Adapted Scoring.
Nomination: Best Costume Design
