Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna followed up their success in Born Free with an engaging film about an otter. It is a semi-documentary, based on Gavin Maxwell’s autobiographical bestseller, Ring of Bright Water.

Story concerns a London civil servant, anxious to get out of the rat race to write. He makes his decision when he acquires Mij, a young otter, as a pet and finds that keeping the charming but mischievous mammal in a London apartment is frought with headaches. So he and Mij depart for a lonely coastal village in the Highlands where they settle down contentedly in a ramshackle crofter’s cottage.

Travers and McKenna unselfishly subdue their performances to the star demands of the lolloping young rascal, Mij, but keep the interest firmly alive by their tactful playing.
