Sea of Sand, it's claimed, is based on an original story by Sean Fielding, but there is nothing very original about it. It is a routine war adventure, with excellent all-round acting and taut direction by Guy Green.

Pic deals with the Long Range Desert Group on the eve of Alamein [in 1942]. Y Patrol is given the arduous task of blowing up one of the Nazis’ biggest petrol dumps. Mission accomplished, the nine men fight their way back to base.
Shot entirely on location [in Tripolitania, Libya], director Green and cameraman Wilkie Cooper splendidly capture the remote loneliness of the vast desert, the heat, the boredom and the sense of pending danger. The screenplay is predictable, but the dialog is reasonably natural and the various characters are well drawn.
