Variety Critics Debate the Hottest Films in Toronto 2017

As the Toronto International Film Festival 2017 comes to a close, Variety critics Owen Gleiberman and Peter Debruge weigh in on their picks, and which movies were disappointments, at the big event.

Among Gleiberman’s picks were “I, Tonya” and “Chappaquiddick,” while Debruge sang the praises of Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” though both were generally unimpressed with Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing.”

“Conventional wisdom is that Toronto, which recycles the best of Telluride and Venice as well as offering a bunch of new movies, is going to launch whatever that movie that’s going to win an Oscar is,” said Debruge. “And I just hope the rest of the year brings better movies than I’ve been seeing here.”
