‘Patti Cake$’ Star Danielle MacDonald on How She Learned How to Rap for Sundance Breakout
Danielle MacDonald may play an aspiring rapper in Sundance breakout “Patti Cake$,” but it wasn’t a skill she had prior to taking on the role. The actress joined director Geremy Jasper and fellow stars Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, Bridget Everett, and Cathy Moriarty to talk about the film at the Variety Studio presented by Orville Redenbacher’s at the Sundance Film Festival, and called the learning process “really hard.”
“I understand who she is on the inside, so all of the outside stuff, I could learn,” MacDonald said of her character.
“Danielle trained for two years,” Jasper added. “[She] had never done anything musical before.”
Explained MacDonald, “He would send me raps, and I would record them in my closet and send them to him, like, every other week.”
