‘20th Century Women’s’ Mike Mills on Recognizing His Limitations in Writing for Female Characters

“20th Century Women” writer/director Mike Mills discussed his awards-contending film at the Variety Screening Series presented by AARP.

He may have pulled inspiration from his own female influences in his life, but Mills admitted that, as a man, he had certain “limitations” in writing a script centered on women.

“I tried to understand my limitations as a male, straight, white, cis-gendered guy writing about women,” he said. “You gotta acknowledge that you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
