Star Maggie Gyllenhaal and writer-director Sara Colangelo sat down at the Variety Sundance Studio presented by AT&T to discuss their drama, ‘The Kindergarten Teacher.”
“As women, we do get kind of used to going to see a movie or a television show and you’re like, “OK, 30% of this speaks to me.” And we’re OK with it at this point. We’re used to it. We’re used to fitting ourselves into that 30%, making it into what we need in order to be fed by the movies we’re watching,” Gyllenhaal says. “Every once in a while, I’ll read a script where there’s the possibility of expressing 100% of my female experience.”
The story centers on a kindergarten teacher who becomes invested in a prodigious five-year old poet in her class — risking her career, family, and freedom in the process.
