The Darkest Hour Gary Oldman

Why Gary Oldman Didn't Gain Weight to Play Winston Churchill in 'Darkest Hour'

How did Gary Oldman transform into Winston Churchill for Joe Wright’s “Darkest Hour”? Prosthetics. The actor discussed his make-up journey with Kate Winslet on Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” series.

“[I’m] nearly 60. I am not going to put on 50/60 pounds to play the man because it would just be ridiculously unhealthy,” he recalled. “And it would have taken me a long time.”

So Oldman convinced makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji to come out of retirement just to work on the film.

The seventh season of Variety‘s “Actors on Actors,” presented by Google Home, will air from Jan. 2 to Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. on PBS SoCal KOCE.
