Annette Bening stopped by the Variety Studio Presented by AT&T at the Toronto International Film Festival to discuss her new movie “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool,” along with co-star Jamie Bell and director Paul McGuigan. The film is based on Peter Turner’s memoir about his affair with 1940s film star Gloria Grahame, and Bening said everyone involved with the film drew inspiration from the book.
“It’s a very beautiful book, and that’s kind of the inspiration for all of us,” she explained. “Peter as a human being and also the way he wrote.”
Bell cited their visit to his home to get a better sense of film’s atmosphere as an example of Turner’s generosity. “He gave us as much as we wanted, he was willing to talk about it for hours. It did exhaust him — even though she passed in ’81, it’s all still fresh for him in a way.”
