In this revisionist story of one of Disney’s most famous villains, Maleficent is a fairy, has wings and flies. The title character is played, with the help of digital effects, by Angelina Jolie.
“We didn’t want the wings to be static. We wanted them to move and breathe and have a life of their own, just as we
gesture as we talk,” says senior vfx supervisor Carey Villegas. That meant making them digital creations rather than prosthetics, he adds.
The film will feature a whole social structure of fairies, each with a unique design and a unique job in the fairy world. For instance, there are Dark Fairies made of wood and bark. “Some characters have to be a little more scary, but nothing too scary that would frighten young children,” Villegas says.
