High expectations can become a real trap for critics, leading them to judge programs based on what they might have hoped to see, as opposed to what’s actually there.
Still, it’s fair to look at projects in advance – based on their auspices and casting, and especially on a well-done pilot episode – and wonder how, or where, they went wrong. Case studies would include “Smash,” “Homeland” – which took a sharp turn in its second season, and has yet to fully recover – and “The Killing,” whose third season proved about a season-and-a-half too many.
Using those criteria, here are 10 shows from 2013 that, for one reason or another, didn’t live up to their promise. So even if they succeeded or survived commercially, creatively speaking, label them disappointments.
But hey, at least for the handful that did manage to stick around (or which remain in play), better luck next year...
