Oscar history: First nomination
Even in the shadow of Cate Blanchett’s night-blooming Jasmine, Hawkins is no shrinking violet. As Ginger, Jasmine’s adopted, free-spirited sister, Hawkins is less flashy, but equally as forceful as Blanchett. Playing her first American character, she brings a subdued elegance to the drama unmatched by the rest of the cast. Anyone with an overbearing sibling can relate to Ginger’s put-upon patience and quiet suffering, which Hawkins often tries to mask behind that brilliant smile. The British thesp could have easily evoked pity from viewers with her unwavering patience for her intolerable sister and deadbeat boyfriends, but she inspired us to celebrate her instead.
