Song: “Cup of Trouble”
Composer-Lyricists: Mary Steenburgen, Jared Crump, Jeremy Spillman
Performer: Mary Steenburgen
Use in film: The song begins while Robert De Niro is looking in the bathroom mirror reflecting on the previous night, and continues while De Niro shows up at the club where Steenburgen’s character sings.
Moonlighting: “I have had a sort of a second job for the last seven years that I really have not talked about publicly until this movie, and that’s that I write music for Universal Music Publishing Group,” Steenburgen reveals. “I deliberately didn’t talk about it except to friends because I felt, to some extent, I was apprenticing at a craft.”
The process: “For one thing, it needed to be in my range. On a scale of one to Adele, it’s probably right in the middle. But in terms of emotional stuff, I wanted it to be sexy and fun because part of the fun of this character is that, in her own way she is, she is sort of sexy.”
