At $207 million, Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” not only holds the record for the biggest Stateside opening for a superhero pic, but the best domestic opening of all time. After the film bowed in 2012, already-thriving Marvel Studios sky-rocketed from a box office stronghold to a box office powerhouse. Marvel (which dominates this list with six films) movies have benefited from “The Avengers” halo effect as the pic elevated all of its predecessors to boffo openings. “Avengers” went on to earn $1.5 billion worldwide ($623 million Stateside). Its sequel “Age of Ultron” is currently filming and will hit theaters next May.
