“Plainly put, Alien is an old-fashioned scary movie set in a highly realistic sci-fi future, made all the more believable by expert technical craftmanship. Picture isn’t quite good enough to be a combination of The Exorcist and Star Wars, but both titles are likely to come to mind.”
“‘Aliens’ proves a very worthy followup to Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi shocker, ‘Alien.’ James Cameron’s vault into the big time after scoring with the exploitation actioner ‘The Terminator’ makes up for lack of surprise with sheer volume of thrills and chills – emphasis is decidedly on the plural aspect of the title.”
“The shape-shifting ‘Alien’ trilogy reverts back to the form of the first film in this third close encounter — a muddled effort that offers little more than visual splendor to recommend it. Although certain to open strong thanks to the must-see faithful, look for a quick fade beyond the first couple of box office orbits as word-of-mouth and the dour tone pull ‘Alien 3’ down to earth, making it a likely also-ran among this summer’s blockbusters.”
“Tiptoeing into weird Freudian areas and moments of grotesquerie new even to this series, ‘Alien Resurrection,’ the fourth entry in Fox’s almost 20-year-old franchise, is a generally cold, though sometimes wildly imaginative and surprisingly jokey, $70 million scarefest that may prove too mixed a meal to scare up monstrous business among mass auds.”
“The thing-a-ma-jigs have it out with the whatch-a-ma-call-its in ‘Alien Vs. Predator,’ the kind of two-for-one dogfight that usually does more to bury a franchise than revive it. Still, in a multiplex season already defined by cheap thrills, fast gains and vertiginous drops, ‘AVP’ should do respectable biz with genre fans ’round the world.”
“As the second round of an earthbound smackdown between two iconic extraterrestrials, ‘Aliens vs. Predator — Requiem’ provides enough cheap thrills and modest suspense to shake a few shekels from genre fans before really blasting off as homevid product.”
“Ridley Scott’s first sci-fier in the three decades since ‘Blade Runner’ remains earthbound in narrative terms, forever hinting at the existence of a higher intelligence without evincing much of its own.
“The franchise has gone through a number of permutations since, but ‘Alien: Covenant’ is, if nothing else, a return to form for both Scott and the series: a hard-R horror movie, featuring ferocious, acid-dripping space crustaceans, a tough female lead and a bunch of dead-meat crew members.”
